CHAPTER TWELVE
RUBY
Ruby was a reluctant waitress living in a town she didnât want to be in. It went against all her better instincts. But it didnât go against her love for Danae. Two weeks had passed since she started working at The Black Diamond. She took drink orders from stupid humans and did her best to get along without growling too much. It grated on her nerves every time she thought about it. All her real talent was going to waste in this place.
She was better than this. She should be in the kitchen of a swanky restaurant creating mouth-watering meals. She was good in the kitchen, away from people. Sometimes the smells of all the customers in the tight space of the pub was more than she could take. Especially nights leading up to a full moon.
âHey, Ruby, can we get another round?â A middle-aged man asked, running his fingers through his stringy thinning hair pulled across the top of his head.
Ruby felt like telling him sheâd only give him another drink if heâd shave his damn head and got rid of that ridiculous combover.
âUh huh,â she mumbled with a frown. She tried to smile, but it never came out right. The frown was better than snarling and exposing her teeth. She picked up their empty glasses and headed to the counter. âAnother round,â she said to Chuck. She liked Chuck, he was such an easy-going guy. Human, but nonetheless, a decent man.
âAnother round coming up.â Chuck smiled and scooped the two empty glasses behind the bar.
Waiting for two more gin and tonics, Rubyâs mind wandered, excited about her weekend off that started inâ¦she looked at her watch, two hours.
But as the pub door opened and someone walked in, the hair on Rubyâs neck and arms stood up and an uncontrollable growl escaped her breath. Evil was close. Ruby didnât claim to be good, being a werewolf, but she wasnât evil either. At least, certainly not here.
She turned to see who had entered, narrowing her eyes and lifting her upper lip to bare her teeth. Sheâd seen her before. Young woman, pretty, with sky-blue eyes. The blonde woman dressed in red, with red-frame eyeglasses, sat at the end of the bar. Ruby sniffed the air. The woman in red smelled of Wolfbane and garlic. And danger.
âHey, Ivy, whatâll you have?â Chuck slid over to greet the attractive customer.
âRed wine,â Ivy said in a sultry voice, batting her heavy eyelashes at him.
âMalbec okay?â
âMalbecâs fine, Chuck.â She glanced over at Penny standing at the far end of the bar, then turned back to Chuck. âLike my new perfume? I made it myself.â Ivy held her hand out seductively.
He leaned over and smelled her wrist, nodded his approval, then poured her a glass of wine.
Edging up next to Ivy, Ruby leaned in close and said in a low voice, âYou smell like Sunday dinner to me.â She smiled, then took the two gin and tonics to the man and his buddy.
As much as Ruby didnât like her current circumstances, she hated evil.
